Tapestry representing a surrender after a... - Lot 323 - Jean-Marc Delvaux
Tapestry representing a surrender after a battle. Brussels, 16th century, based on a cardboard box by Karel van Mander the Elder. Workshop of Jacques Geubels, son and pupil of Frans Geubels, who worked around 1590, with the border decorated with Vertus surrounded by fruit and flower vases. 300 x 355 cm. Accidents, scratches and discolorations. Faced with loot and weapons on the ground, the defeated man, bent in a gesture of submission, holding a spear with one hand, handed a tape with the other to a victorious general on horseback. In the background, the looting of a camp where camels can be seen. In the distance, a city in front of a succession of hills. The identification of this scene is not easy. It could be a victory in the history of Rome, perhaps the Battle of Zama.
