Pair of silver torches, standing on a round... - Lot 34 - Jean-Marc Delvaux
Pair of silver torches, standing on a round base with gadroon moldings, the cylindrical collar and tapered shaft. Engraved with the coat of arms of the de Rachais family, lords of Montferrat, surmounted by a marquis crown. Unreadable goldsmith's mark. Paris, 1694-1695. Height : 17,5 cm - Weight : 758 g. (restorations under the bottom, formerly repolished) For the coat of arms: azure with a golden band charged with a lion passant. Ecu stamped with a marquis crown. Two lions in support; only one noble family in France, at the end of the XVIIth century, had a similar coat of arms: The Rachais, lords of Monferrat, from the Dauphiné. The pair of torches bearing the coat of arms of the aforementioned family was probably ordered in Paris by Sébastien de Rachais, Lord of Montferrat, who lived in the second half of the 17th century. In the service of the king, he was colonel of an infantry regiment bearing his name and knight of Saint Louis. The name of the land of Montferrat comes from the powerful family of Monferrat (Monferrato), a former marquisate and later duchy of Piedmont.
