THE ILLUMINATION KNOWN AS GIRANDOLE, OF THE BASILICA SAINT-PIERRE AND THE CASTLE SAINT-ANGE. Oil on canvas. 66 x100 cm. Every June 29th, since the 17th century, Rome celebrates its patron saints, Peter and Paul, by the illumination of the roofs of the Saint Angelo castle and Saint Peter's basilica. The origin of this fireworks with pyrotechnic effects is generally attributed to Michelangelo. This event has strongly inspired the painters of the nineteenth century.
