Max INGRAND (1908-1969): L'EVANGILE SELON... - Lot 25 - Jean-Marc Delvaux
Max INGRAND (1908-1969): L'EVANGILE SELON SAINT JEAN, project for a two-part stained-glass window. Exceptional suite of nine gouaches on black Canson pasted on gray paper. Seven of them bear the monogram VAT for Vitrail Atmosphère - Tapisserie de verre, and the letters D, E, F, G, H, J, K, which allow us to reconstruct the order of the decorative program. H. 56 cm - W. 322 cm and H. 56 cm - W. 431 cm. Gouaches A and B are cut with Canson, gouache C is missing, stains, folds, undulations. Provenance: Max Ingrand studio, then Michel Durand studio. The authenticity of these gouaches has been kindly confirmed by Mr. Jean-Pierre Blin, author of the thesis Max Ingrand (1908-1969) : atelier de vitrail dans la France du XXe siècle, defended in 2015 at the Sorbonne. Max Ingrand was not only artistic director of the famous Italian glass manufacturer Fontana Arte from 1954 to 1964, he was also one of the most renowned French master glassmakers of the 20th century. In the 1930s, with his wife Paule, he created the stained glass windows for the decorative program of the art deco Sainte-Agnès church in Maisons-Alfort. Taken prisoner during the Second World War, his faith became his lifeline. He decorated the camp chapel. After the war, he devoted much of his work to commissioning religious stained-glass windows for the restoration or reconstruction of churches destroyed during the conflict. Michel Durand, who joined his studio in 1953, recalls that Max Ingrand worked from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., painting his gouaches himself. Projects were generally produced to 1/10th scale, which would give the exceptional dimensions of 5.60 m in height and 43 m in length. These could be complete walls. As no such program is known, it was probably never built. Nevertheless, it remains an important testimony to Max Ingrand's work as a painter and to his spirituality.
