Silver snuffbox, oyster-shaped, flat, inlaid with seaweed and shells, the interior in gilt. Hallmark of the Master goldsmith Bernard BELLAVOINE, received around 1738. Blois, around 1755. Height : 2,9 cm - Length : 7,1 cm - Width : 6,5 cm - Weight : 105,26 g. Bernard Bellavoine, born in 1710, was apprenticed at the age of fourteen to Henri Adnet. He was elected as a sworn guard in 1759 and was active until 1761. Some acts mention him until 1766. The date of his death is unknown. Only a few rare examples of oyster-shaped snuff boxes are known. Among them are two boxes by Bernard Bellavoine: an almost identical one, with small variations, Blois ca. 1748, Ader-Picard-Tajan sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 1983, lot 44; another similar one, Drouot Estimations sale, Paris, July 8, 2015, lot 262. The Louvre Museum holds in its collections a silver oyster-shaped snuffbox, without hallmark, 18th-19th century.
