Square in vermeil, of rectangular form with contours, posing on a frame; the decoration with channels alternated with rosettes, laurel leaves and ribbons; the base decorated with gadroons; the lid with hinge and doucines, with edge of mouldings of laurel leaves. Mark of the Master goldsmith Robert-Joseph AUGUSTE, received in 1757. Paris, 1777-1778. Height : 11 cm - Length : 28 cm - Width : 20,7 cm - Weight : 3 126 g. The pairs of squares or toilet boxes were, with the mirror, the most important pieces of a toilet set which could be composed of powder boxes, blush pots, root boxes, a pair of soap and sponge balls, ewer and basin, a pair of candlesticks and various flasks. The squares were used to hold brushes and combs. Bibliography: A toilet box or square (of a pair) of the same model by Robert-Joseph Auguste, Paris 1777-1778, is reproduced in the exhibition catalog, "Three Centuries of French Domestic silver", Faith Dennis, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New-York, 1960, vol. 1 - p. 43. Robert-Joseph Auguste, received master in Paris in 1757, with the guarantee of Joseph Vallayer, he inscribed his mark: Fleur de lys couronnée, RJA, a palm and two grains. In 1778, he was appointed ordinary goldsmith to the king and was the main supplier to the crown until the Revolution; he received prestigious orders from the great international courts such as those of London, St. Petersburg or Stockholm; in 1784, he was housed in the Galleries of the Louvre in place of Roettiers.
